Teen Pregnancy Prevention
In Berkshire County the likelihood of teenage girls (15-19 years) giving birth increased 20.5% from 1998 to 2007 while the rate in the state steadily decreased 21.7%. Children born to teen parents are far more likely to live in poverty as a result of the education and employment challenges faced by their young parents.

These troubling statistics gave rise to a new collaborative effort - the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative - including Berkshire United Way and representatives from business, education, health care and local social service agencies. With input from the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy the team conducted surveys among 900 Berkshire County youth and adults and shared results with concerned citizens at its first "community conversation" in April 2011. You'll find all of the latest details below.
